AOL now FREE August 9, 2006

I’d heard about this recently, but the news must have gone in one ear and out the other, because I just did a double-take upon visiting AOL’s info page.
I actually visited AOL’s web site to get more information about the 5GB of free online storage I heard they were planning to offer. So
apparently they are offering their e-mail and content now for free, provided you already have an Internet connection. (Another big freebie coming in September: free personalized e-mail addresses.) People who don’t already have an Internet Service Provider can still buy it for as low as $9.95/mo., which is the same as Juno and NetZero (both of which are part of the same company). I guess all the $9.95 dial-up providers have to change their “half the price of AOL!” advertising.
I guess with the proliferation of high-speed Internet service to homes, it’s trivial for AOL to deliver their content to most users now. Besides, they don’t want to lose any more people to free e-mail providers like Google and Hotmail. So I wonder how exactly they plan to make up that money.
Advertising and … premium content? Something else? Hmmm.
Sugar cube-sized MP3 player, the mobiBLU August 3, 2006

I’ve always been a sucker for technology that’s… cute. The mobiBLU certainly fits that description, though I’d be afraid to drop it in my coffee by mistake.
Looks like there’s barely room for the headphone plug in this thing. Just shy of one inch square, it can hold 500 songs (or more, depending on format), lets you listen to FM radio, and includes a voice recorder.
And they managed to cram a clock in there, too.
